Toast with Edgar Allen Poe on it? Sure why not..
The new Poe Toaster honors an annual tribute to American author Edgar Allan Poe by a mysterious person known as the "Poe Toaster."
For over seventy years the "Poe Toaster" would visit Edgar Allen Poe’s original grave site in Baltimore, Maryland during the early hours of January 19th and leave the dead poet a birthday gift of roses and the remainder of a bottle of cognac. Presumably what was left over after toasting the great American author.
Announcing their new Poe Toaster, the company put this "fractured" poem on their Facebook Page:
Once upon a midnight munchie, while I pondered weak and hungry,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten carbs,
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a popping,
As of something gently lifting, lifting from my toaster’s floor.
`’Tis something,’ I muttered, lifting from my toaster’s floor-
Only these two slices, and nothing more.’
-Edgar Allen Poe FrAcTuReD"We like having fun with things." says CEO Galen Dively. This seems an understatement coming from a man that put the image Jesus and human genitalia on toast, albeit not the same slice. "We call it conceptual toast art."
Mr. Dively lived in Maryland for years and he explains, "I grew up with the legend of the Poe Toaster. I am a big fan of Edgar Allen Poe. This was a natural."
He feels the legend of the Poe Toaster should be celebrated for breakfast… evermore.
Ever since their Jesus Toaster gained notoriety as a popular Christmas novelty gift, the Vermont Novelty Toaster Corporation has made a tradition of creating quirky off-beat toasters.
