Just four days away from the planned ‘Samsung Unpacked Mobile’ event that was expected to be the announcement of the Samsung Nexus Prime,  Samsung’s UK division notified both Engadget and SlashGear that the announcement had been cancelled. While the event will still proceed, the product announcement will reportedly be made at a later date:

“Samsung and Google decide to postpone the new product announcement at CTIA Fall. We agree that it is just not the right time to announce a new product. New date and venue will be shortly announced.”

The Samsung Nexus Prime is expected to be a big phone for both companies. The phone will serve as the reference model for the latest release of Google’s Android operating system, code named Ice Cream Sandwich. As well as providing critics and users with a first look of the new OS, the reference model also shows off the latest hardware available to Android manufacturers.

The Nexus Prime reportedly has a massive 4.65″ screen that boasts a full 720p HD resolution – 720 x 1280 pixels. The curved chassis also sports a quick dual core CPU, clocked at 1.5GHz, a full gigabyte of RAM, and 16 GB of on-board storage.

With such a powerful lineup, Samsung and Google would be expected to show off the phone as soon as possible. For this reason, there’s some speculation as to the cause of the delay; beyond the obvious technical or legal reasons, some have guessed that Samsung and Google are doing it out of respect to fallen Apple leader Steve Jobs, who died the day after the iPhone 4S was announced.

Whatever the reason, we should see a new data and location for the Nexus Prime announcement quite soon – they may be willing to cede a few days to the memory of Jobs, but they won’t stop their competition with his company.
