When you are converting your videos it is important that you make sure their aspect ratio stays the same. Essentially the aspect ratio is simply the ratio of width to height, and is typically 16:9 nowadays – though some older devices may still use 4:3.

The reason why it is important to maintain the aspect ratio of your videos is that changing it could cause the images in your video to look strange – either by being ‘stretched’ or ‘squashed’. Fortunately, it is easy enough to maintain the proper aspect ratio when converting videos with Movavi Video Converter, and all you need to do is:

  1. Launch Movavi Video Converter.
  2. Click on the ‘Add Media’ button and select ‘Add Video’ then choose the video that you want to convert.
  3. Open the ‘Video’ tab near the bottom and select the format that you want to convert your video to. When you do a list of presets with different resolutions will appear and to maintain the same resolution and aspect ratio just select the one that says ‘Same as input’.
  4. Click ‘Convert’ to convert your video.

If you want to change the resolution while still maintaining the same aspect ratio, all you need to do is make sure that still matches. For example if your original video is 16:9 then you can maintain the original aspect ratio while still converting it to 640×360, 960×540, 1280×720 (720p) or 1920×1080 (1080p) – which are all presets in Movavi Video Converter.

By that same token you can just as easily use Movavi Video Converter as an aspect ratio converter and switch the aspect ratio of your videos to suit the screens of different devices. Bear in mind that this may affect how the video appears.

In some cases it may actually be better for you to crop your video rather than resizing its aspect ratio. On that front Movavi Video Converter can help you out as well, as it includes several other features that will let you crop, rotate, cut and join video segments, improve the video quality, insert customizable text, create animated GIFs, and a whole lot more.

With all these features available, it is up to you to decide how you want to convert and alter your video. If all you’re interested in is changing its resolution while maintaining the aspect ratio then the presets in Movavi Video Converter should more than suffice. On the other hand if you’re looking to adjust it more comprehensively for a particular screen size or some other reason you may want to get creative and look to these features for the best way of doing so.
